What's the difference between massage for relaxation and massage for chronic pain or injury?
The strokes themselves are mostly the same. For relaxation the strokes are applied more generally, to broader areas of the body, to produce an overall feeling of relaxation. The primary therapeutic goals are to calm the body and mind and to reduce general tension. While each treatment is tailored to your needs, frequency of treatment is generally as needed.
For treating pain and injury a more thorough assessment is performed and the strokes are applied precisely to the tissues involved. A treatment plan is tailored to your symptoms, signs (posture, range of motion, strength), tolerances, and goals; and revised as your needs change. Reaching those goals sometimes requires multiple treatments, especially in the beginning. As symptoms improve, treatment frequency is reduced until your treatments become occasional, less specific, and ideally for pure relaxation alone. We integrate relaxation and condition-specific techniques, to varying degrees, according to your goals, tolerance, and improvements over time.

What should I expect for my appointment?
Each appointment includes 60 or 90 minutes of treatment, plus assessment as needed. Depending on your symptoms, assessment could take 5-20 minutes so be sure to allot the additional time in your schedule. Assessment helps us understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and to plan effective treatment. But always let us know what you want during your session. We may notice that your hips aren't moving freely, but if you want us to focus on your neck and shoulders, let us know and we will.

Why can’t I book appointments online?
It is important for us to chat with you prior to your appointment so that we can assess whether massage is appropriate for your needs, whether there may be contra-indications, or if it may be better to wait until you’re further along in your recovery from an injury or surgery before beginning massage therapy. We may ask you to share clinical notes from other health care providers prior to your session so we are prepared when you arrive, so that we can do any research necessary to help me plan effective treatment, and to prevent you from wasting time and money if massage is not currently ideal.

Do you take insurance?
We wish it was a given that insurance covered therapeutic massage, but it's not as common as it should be. If your insurance covers massage therapy, we'll be happy to work with them. Most health savings accounts can be used for massage therapy. We can provide a receipt for you to submit for reimbursement from your insurance company, workers comp claim or health savings account.

Do I have to talk during the appointment?
Though we do need to ask you questions about what you're feeling during a treatment, conversation beyond that is completely up to you. Some like to chat, some prefer to be silent. It is always your choice.

What should I do if I have a cold or think one may be coming?
If you believe you have symptoms resembling COVID19, please reschedule your appointment.
For general colds, it depends. If you have even a slight fever, please reschedule. If you have any symptoms, please wear a mask. If you feel a cold coming or are in the first days, massage can kick it into high gear. Sometimes that makes the recovery quicker, but it could also get worse before it gets better. Otherwise, it really depends on how you feel. If you feel like you could make it through the work day or your workout without feeling awful, massage should be fine too. We disinfect equipment, door handles, etc. after a client with a cold, so wear your mask and cover your coughs and sneezes, but you may not need to reschedule. Feel free to text or call if you're not sure.

What should I do if I’m going to be late for my appointment?
It happens sometimes. We will always do our best to provide as much treatment time as possible, even when you're late, but providing the full session will depend on our schedule for the day and you will be responsible for the full price of the time originally requested.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?
We appreciate at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel so we can make the appointment available to others. This isn't always possible, and we trust your consideration for our time and other clients' needs. If cancelling less than 24 hours in advance becomes a habit, you may be billed for 50% of the price of the missed session.
